IGAD warns of drier October–December in Kenya, Horn of Africa
NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 18 – The Horn of Africa is set to face drier-than-usual conditions between October and December, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) has warned.
According to the latest outlook, below-average rainfall is expected in most parts of Somalia, Djibouti, coastal Sudan and Eritrea, southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and central to southern Uganda and Tanzania.
The forecast also points to warmer-than-average temperatures across much of the region, with the highest probabilities in Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, and Tanzania.
The October–December period is traditionally a key planting season following the long rains, but shifting weather patterns linked to climate change continue to disrupt agricultural cycles.
The warning comes as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and IGAD estimate that 72 million people in the region are already food insecure.
