Safaricom Surpasses 50 Million Customers In Kenya

Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications company, has hit a historic milestone by surpassing 50 million customers on its mobile network, solidifying its position as the country’s most widely used telco ahead of its 25th anniversary in October.

The company announced the achievement with gratitude, crediting the milestone to the enduring trust and loyalty of the Kenyan people.

“This milestone reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a half decades,” said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom Group CEO. “As we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit ourselves to always being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers.”

Safaricom’s journey began in 2000 with just 17,000 subscribers. Over the last 25 years, the company has grown alongside Kenya’s digital transformation, driving innovation in mobile money, internet connectivity, and digital services.

The growth to 50 million customers is partly attributed to an aggressive customer engagement campaign that kicked off in 2024 as part of the countdown to the company’s 25th anniversary.

The achievement comes at a time when mobile penetration in Kenya continues to rise. According to official data, total mobile subscriptions in the country had surged past 76 million by March 2025. Airtel Kenya held 24.5 million active SIM cards, while Telkom Kenya had 2.25 million subscribers as of June.

Safaricom’s announcement is more than just a corporate milestone. It marks a key moment in Kenya’s technological evolution and positions the company to continue leading innovation in digital connectivity, financial inclusion, and customer experience.

“As we look to the future,” Ndegwa added, “we’re focused on not just growing our numbers, but growing with purpose, helping every Kenyan thrive in the digital age.”
