Comesa Issues Alert After Mercedes-Benz SA Recalls Luxury GLE (167) Model – The Kenyan Wall Street

The Comesa Competition Commission is cautioning buyers over Mercedes-Benz Model GLE (167) vehicle, which has been recalled by Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

  • Earlier this month, the National Consumer Commission of South Africa (NCC) asked affected owners of models made between 2022-2025 to make a booking for the vehicles to be checked or repaired.
  • The mid-sized luxury SUV’s processor in the control unit of the high-voltage starter generator may experience sporadic overload, making the system incorrectly detect a faulty component in the high-voltage starter alternator.
  • Ultimately, the functions of the high-voltage starter generator could be deactivated, potentially leading to an unexpected loss of propulsion power without warning, which could increase the risk of an accident.

The NCC media statement further indicated that the vehicles may have been exported to Eswatini within the Common Market. However, Comesa has established that several other Member States import similar vehicles from South Africa.

“Pursuant to COMESA Competition Regulations, the Commission hereby informs the public of the risks associated with the recalled Mercedes-Benz Model GLE (167) vehicle and wishes to advise affected consumers to have their vehicles checked or repaired and to take precautions when purchasing Mercedes Benz with particulars indicated in the recall,” the regional antitrust regulator said.

The commission has also issued an alert over Casely portable 5000mAh MagSafe wireless phone charger with model number E33A. The powerbank is manufactured in China and imported in the USA by Casely.Inc and was being sold online at getcasely.com, Amazon.com and other e-commerce websites from March 2022 through September 2024 for between $30 and $70.

According to US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Lithium-ion battery in the power banks can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.
