Seyoum Damtew, the Director of Information System Security at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, has been awarded the ‘CISO of the Year’ title at the 23rd Edition, Connected Banking Summit – Innovation & Excellence Awards Ethiopia.
He received this award as an honour to his excellence in cybersecurity leadership, having been one of the top faces in the cybersecurity sector in Ethiopia. The Internal Center For Strategic Alliances took to social media to celebrate this achievement and applaud Damtew for his exemplary leadership.
“This distinguished award recognizes Seyoum Damtew’s exceptional expertise, unwavering commitment, and strategic vision in safeguarding critical banking infrastructures against evolving cyber threats. His leadership in cyber security has been instrumental in building resilience and trust within the financial sector,” the ICSA wrote on LinkedIn.
In an interview with CIO Africa earlier this year, Damtew expressed his deep passion in cybersecurity saying that his journey into cybersecurity has been both exciting and purpose-driven.
“From an early stage in my career, I was fascinated by technology’s impact on businesses, particularly in electrical and computer engineering, risk management, and security,” he told CIO Africa.
His academic path which includes a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Mekelle University and a degree in Computer Engineering from Addis Ababa University, laid the groundwork for his technical expertise.
With a career that bridges telecommunications and banking, Damtew has become a key architect of digital security for one of East Africa’s largest financial institutions.
