The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) wants consumers to be vigilant to curb the infiltration of counterfeit goods in markets.

Kebs Lake Regional Manager in charge of Laboratory Testing Services Tom Oduor said consumers can play a big role in the war against substandard goods.

Speaking during a sensitisation programme in Homa Bay Town, Oduor urged consumers to conduct online verification of the mark of quality on the goods to establish whether they are authentic or not.

“Consumers can go to our website and type the number they have seen on the product. This will enable them to see if the permit displayed on the goods is genuine or not,” Oduor said.

He told consumers to avoid buying goods that lack the certification to cushion against consumption of harmful substances.

“For the safety of consumers, it is important not to buy any manufactured goods that have not been certified by KEBS. This will prevent consumption of harmful substances,” he added.

The manager told residents to report to Kebs anybody selling uncertified manufactured goods.

“Anybody who comes across uncertified manufactured goods in the market should report to us so that punitive legal action can be taken against them. Do not fear blowing the whistle,” Oduor warned.

He revealed that modalities have been put in place to prevent unscrupulous businessmen from using Kebs certification marks irregularly.

“We are also conducting regular surveillance to weed out fake Kebs marks used on goods we have not certified,” he added.
